From azcentral.com
By Brent Whiting
Sept. 9, 2005 12:00 AM

Man's Murder Near School Stumps Police

The headline in the Sept. 1, 2004, edition of The Arizona Republic read: "Strolling pair discover slain man near school."

The story began: "The body of a Peoria man, an apparent homicide victim, was discovered Tuesday near a grade school by a man and woman taking a morning walk.

"Police identified the victim as Esteban Canales, 19. They said his body was found near Desert Garden Elementary School, 7020 W. Ocotillo Road, but there is no school connection to the death.

"Investigators said Canales was slain, as evidenced by body trauma, but the motive for the crime is unknown."

When and where: On Aug. 31, nearly 30 friends and relatives of Esteban Canales gathered at the murder scene for a candlelight vigil marking the one-year anniversary of his shooting death.

They were attempting to draw attention to the case, hoping to generate new clues that would lead police to the killer.

Canales, a Peoria resident, was gunned down at Desert Garden Park, 7100 W. Ocotillo Road, south of Glendale Avenue, a green spot near Desert Garden Elementary School.

Summary: The slaying took place between 1 and 4 a.m. Aug. 31, 2004. Police have yet to figure out why he was in the public park so early in the morning.

Roger Geisler, a Glendale police homicide investigator, said Thursday he's stumped for new leads and needs the public's help.

Witnesses said that before the killing, Canales was seen near Murphy Park in Peoria, 73rd Avenue and Cheryl Drive, about 2 ½ miles away, almost due north, Geisler said.

Canales was observed getting into a four-door car, but descriptions of the vehicle are sketchy and nobody took note of the license plate, he said.

Canales was a senior at Peoria Accelerated High School, a charter school, and had looked forward to enlisting in the Marine Corps after graduation, relatives said.

Investigator What bothers police most: "There are three disturbing things about this case," Geisler said.

"First is the young age of the victim.

Second, it's troubling that he was slain in a public park and the body was left there for anybody to see.

And third, the motive for this slaying remains a mystery."

New technology's role: For now, police are relying on old-fashioned gumshoe techniques to solve this case, Geisler said. If a suspect is found, then there is evidence on which DNA analysis can be used to make a positive link.

How you can help: Contact Geisler at RGeisler@glendaleaz.com or (623) 930-3325, or Silent Witness at 1-800-343-TIPS.
